Outwood Primary Academy Newstead Green in Havercroft opened its doors to more than 250 members of the community for its annual family fun day. The school hosted the day in conjunction with Havercroft Family Hub, which shares the site, and welcomed more than 20 partner organisations, including West Yorkshire Police, NHS, Wakefield Council, Biffa, Cashwise, Spectrum Health, Recovery College and Turning Point. The event was open to all members of the local community and welcomed local councillors, Cllr Maureen Cummings and Cllr Usman Ali.

The event featured a food truck and an ice cream van, providing refreshments courtesy of the Family Hub, and offered a variety of activities to keep families engaged throughout the day, including sports, face painting, a dance party, a butterfly trail, and an inflatable obstacle course. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was also on site with a fire engine available for the community to explore.

Lindsey Corbett, Principal at Outwood Primary Academy Newstead Green, said:

“Building on the incredible success of last year's event, we were determined to make this year's gala even better, and it was wonderful to see so many of our students and their families enjoying themselves.

“Hosting an event where our community can come together for a fun, affordable day out during the school holidays is so important to us, and the incredible turnout showed just how much it meant to everyone. We hope this is a tradition we can continue for many years to come.”

A tombola facilitated by Squaring Up Interventions raised over £200 for the Dogs Trust Freedom project, a service for dog owners who are planning to find safety from domestic abuse but are unable to take their dogs with them. Freedom provides a temporary home for their dog with a loving foster carer until their owners are safe, settled and ready to have them back.

Claire Jackson, Trust Strategic Lead for Family and Community Programmes and Partnerships at app, said:

“We are so grateful for the incredible support from the numerous agencies that partnered with us to make this event a reality.

“The day truly showcased the power of collaboration and community. While it was centred on fun activities for children, it also provided a relaxed environment where our partners could connect with families. It was a safe, joyful space for families to connect and make lasting memories.”

Teachers to be trained to help pupils tackle conspiracy belief and online misinformationSarah RoyalFri, 18 Jul 2025 13:02:54 +0000/ogat-news/2025/7/18/teachers-to-be-trained-to-help-pupils-tackle-conspiracy-belief-and-online-misinformation5b3cc2548f5130df897ee8b8:5ba22a4c70a6adc92989bfef:687a2558c658061710e6d343A major drive to help pupils navigate the growing threat of online conspiracies, misinformation and disinformation has been launched, thanks to new funding from the Pears Foundation.

Two national programmes, each led by the National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) and IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, will provide teachers and school leaders across England with new training and resources to protect pupils and strengthen critical thinking in the digital age.

Teachers on the frontline of tackling online misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy belief in classrooms will be supported through a new, nationwide training and resource programme.

For the first time, they will have practical tools to help challenge harmful narratives and protect pupils.

At the heart of this work is the launch of a new Centre for Digital Information Literacy in Schools, a national initiative led by the National Institute of Teaching and funded by the Pears Foundation.

The Centre, led by NIoT, will embed critical thinking, psychological insight and media literacy across teacher development, from trainee teachers and classroom practitioners to school leaders and governors.

The Centre’s work will include national training for teachers, leadership qualifications and school governance, alongside new online learning modules, practical classroom resources and public engagement through podcasts and media campaigns.

The Pears Foundation is also funding a new programme at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society where experts Jeremy Hayward and Gemma Gronland will lead a new programme focused on providing teachers the skills and resources they need to tackle conspiracy theories and online misinformation.

The project will support both primary and secondary teachers through piloted CPD, a national training rollout and the creation of classroom materials designed to help pupils think critically and resist harmful narratives online.

Both programmes have been funded in direct response to the findings of the Commission into Countering Online Conspiracies in Schools – the largest study of its kind in England. The Commission found that teachers are increasingly encountering conspiracy theories and misinformation in classrooms but lack the confidence, training and resources to respond to this challenge.

Its recommendations called for urgent action to embed training into teacher education, develop regularly updated classroom resources, and adopt a whole-school and community approach. Funded by the Pears Foundation and delivered by Public First, the Commission’s work has directly shaped the design and focus of the two new initiatives.

Sir Trevor Pears CMG, Executive Chair of the Pears Foundation, said:

“Schools are at the sharp end of this crisis. Teachers are telling us they urgently need support to help students navigate a world of disinformation, conspiracy theories and harmful online narratives.

“The Pears Foundation is proud to fund these major national initiatives – practical, research-led programmes that will give teachers the tools and confidence to respond. This work speaks directly to our mission: strengthening education, supporting young people and building a more resilient civil society.”

Melanie Renowden, Chief Executive of the National Institute of Teaching, said:

“Teachers are on the front line of a new and urgent challenge – supporting young people to navigate a world increasingly shaped by misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy belief.

“Yet too often, they’re doing so without the tools, training or confidence they need. That’s why we’re proud to launch the Centre for Digital Information Literacy in Schools, generously supported by the Pears Foundation.

“This initiative aims to deliver long-term, systemic change by embedding critical thinking, psychological insight and media literacy into teacher development at every level.

“The Centre has been shaped by the work of the Commission into Countering Online Conspiracies in Schools, which heard clearly from teachers that they need urgent training and support to tackle this growing challenge.

“By working in deep partnership with schools, we hope to build a generation of educators equipped to lead with clarity and confidence in the misinformation age.”

Jeremy Hayward, project lead at UCL, said:

“Every teacher recognises the impact that online misinformation and conspiracy thinking can have on young people. Whether it is misinformation about vaccines, misogynistic influencers like Andrew Tate, or more subtle harmful narratives, teachers are increasingly being asked to address these challenges – often without the training or resources they need.

“Thanks to support from the Pears Foundation, we’re building a practical programme that will give teachers the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond. Our work will focus on both primary and secondary schools, providing classroom resources and professional development rooted in real-world classroom experience. Ultimately, this is about building resilience – giving teachers the tools to help their pupils think critically, challenge harmful content and navigate the online world safely.”

Outwood's young writers hone skills in journalism experienceSarah RoyalWed, 16 Jul 2025 13:45:54 +0000/ogat-news/2025/7/16/outwoods-young-writers-hone-skills-in-journalism-experience5b3cc2548f5130df897ee8b8:5ba22a4c70a6adc92989bfef:6877abe0a824090027a307e7More than 200 students from Outwood family secondary schools have participated in a 'News Day'. The event celebrated the most gifted writers in Year 7, across 18 secondary schools, and offered them the opportunity to work as journalists for the day, including interviewing a guest.

The day began with a briefing from app (OGAT) CEO, Lee Wilson, before working collaboratively in teams to research their interviewee and plan questions. Students interviewed Carolyn Blundell, community executive principal at OGAT, who spoke about her daughter's legacy. Carolyn's daughter, Lulu, passed away aged 19 due to Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Despite her illness, Lulu raised more than £200,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust through various charity events and sports challenges. Once the students had all the information they needed, they drafted and edited various articles for an academy newspaper, which was printed and published at the end of the day.

Heather Holmes, senior director of English at OGAT, said:

"News day was an extraordinary day for our Year 7 students, who showed great maturity, sensitivity, and leadership as they created their newspapers. They worked together to write a range of articles that celebrated their schools and their communities.

"A huge thank you to Mrs Blundell, our interviewee, and to all our teaching and support colleagues who were involved in the day as well; their enthusiasm and dedication really helped to make the day a huge success."

A group of university students are celebrating after successfully completing a Teaching Internship Programme with the Outwood Institute of Education (OIE), gaining valuable insight into the teaching profession.

The OIE's teaching internship programme is designed for students pursuing degrees related to chemistry, computing, languages, mathematics, or physics who are interested in a teaching career.

Now in its eighth year, the three-week paid programme welcomed its largest cohort yet, with 42 participants. For the second year running, the programme was also open to master's students, alongside undergraduates from many top universities.

Interns gained classroom experience, benefited from mentorship by seasoned teachers and completed a bespoke training programme. They also received guidance and advice on applying for teacher training with app (OGAT) through the National Institute of Teaching (NIoT).

To fully immerse themselves in academy life, the interns engaged in a variety of activities. These included shadowing experienced teachers, observing lessons, collaborating on lesson planning and delivery, receiving personalised guidance, and networking with subject specialists.

Julie Slater, Chief Executive Principal (OIE), said:

“Our Teaching Internship Programme has been a resounding success for years, and this year we proudly doubled our cohort size. The internship offers interns invaluable insights into school life, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.

“For Outwood, it's always about showcasing the teaching profession, celebrating our incredible students and staff, and securing a future pipeline of dedicated teachers by demonstrating just how rewarding teaching can be. We're especially proud to see former interns who completed the programme, then trained with us, and are now valued teachers in our schools.”

The end-of-programme celebration event allowed the interns to celebrate their successes and discuss their experiences, and reflect on the programme together.

Students with their pen pal letters

app Riverside in Middlesbrough has been awarded the foundation level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life and work in today’s world.

app Riverside provides a rich international experience for its students. Recent highlights include an educational trip to Belgium and France, a successful pen pal programme with a school in Barcelona, and attendance at Pearson Edexcel's ‘More than words: A celebration of languages’ event in London. The academy regularly hosts language competitions, cultural celebration days, and modern foreign languages (MLF) taster sessions. Reflecting its diverse community, the school offers GCSE qualifications in 11 different languages, encompassing both curriculum and community languages.

On hearing the news that app Riverside had achieved the foundation level of the award, Rosa Ariz Rivas, head of MFL at the academy, said: “I’m incredibly proud that we have been recognised with the foundation level of the International School Award. It’s a testament to the hard work and passion of our staff and students. This award reflects our commitment to global citizenship, inclusivity, and cultural awareness in our students. This is not just an MFL initiative, it’s embedded in our whole school ethos.

“With 43 different languages spoken across the school, diversity and inclusivity have always been some of our top priorities, and this award celebrates and acknowledges this. It is really rewarding to see how much our students enjoy these opportunities and how it broadens their horizons.”

Shannon West, Head of UK Schools for the British Council, said: “app Riverside’s international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition with the British Council International School Award - Foundation Certificate.

“We are delighted and proud that app Riverside is committed to developing a whole school approach to embedding and celebrating international work. The dedication from everyone is enriching education, supporting globally aware young people and the development of key skills.

“We thank all involved in this important work; embedding an international ethos across a school can lead to International School Award accreditation, which is the highest level of the award. Schools looking to join this supportive and engaging global network should contact us at the British Council.”

The Award is now available worldwide in countries such as Greece, India and Nigeria. Over 6000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.

The International School Award encourages and supports schools to develop:

  • An international ethos embedded throughout the school

  • A whole school approach to international work

  • Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools

  • Year-round international activity

  • Involvement of the wider community

Students from app (OGAT) are preparing for an extraordinary journey to Cambodia, where they will participate in community development projects with Camps International. This once-in-a-lifetime trip will see students from years 10, 11 and post-16 engage in vital environmental work, achieve their open water diving certification, and contribute to local community initiatives.

For 12 years, Outwood schools have partnered with Camps International to provide extraordinary student expeditions. However, this year introduces a ground-breaking change: students from 17 Outwood secondary schools will, for the first time, participate in a singular, collective trip, allowing them to collaborate and build relationships with peers from different schools within the Outwood family.

More than 200 students and 22 staff members from across the Outwood family of schools will spend four weeks in Cambodia this summer. They will start their journey in Siem Reap, where they will spend 25 days, before heading to the capital city of Phnom Penh. Under the expert guidance of Camps International, a leader in responsible and ethical expeditions, participants will undertake a PADI open water scuba diving course.

The trip is designed to cultivate a range of essential skills, including teamwork, problem-solving, cultural awareness, and environmental stewardship. Students will participate in various activities, all of which will contribute towards 10 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including clean water and sanitation, reduced inequalities, climate action, and life below water.

Julie Slater, Chief Executive Principal at OGAT said:

"I am so pleased that this trip has come to fruition. The planning started as we returned from the COVID pandemic and I wanted to give students something to look forward to. It is important to give our students incredible experiences outside of the classroom.

“This expedition will see our students from 17 Outwood schools come together, working on community projects in Cambodia and creating everlasting memories. They will be challenged to step out of their comfort zones, work as a team and have lots of fun along the way. Working in partnerships with Camps International has enabled us to organise a trip of such significant scale. I am looking forward to hearing all about what our students and staff get up to when they return and wish them all a fantastic time.”

app is committed to providing exceptional opportunities that broaden horizons and prepare students for future success. It is dedicated to fostering global citizens who are equipped to tackle real-world challenges.

Camps International is an award-winning expedition provider that delivers sustainable and ethical volunteer and adventure travel experiences across the globe. Its projects focus on conservation, community development, and education, ensuring that participants make a real, positive impact on the areas they visit.

OGAT would also like to express its appreciation to Morse Coaches, York and Johnson Bros (Tours) Ltd, Worksop, who will be providing free coach travel for staff and students.

Outwood students shape their futures at sixth student voice conferenceSarah RoyalFri, 04 Jul 2025 07:30:32 +0000/ogat-news/2025/7/3/outwood-students-shape-their-futures-at-sixth-student-voice-conference5b3cc2548f5130df897ee8b8:5ba22a4c70a6adc92989bfef:686648ee552fe05191028aa0

app (OGAT) students gathered for their sixth student voice conference this week. The conference focused on careers and personal development, a theme chosen by the students themselves. More than 100 students from across the Outwood Family of Schools attended the conference to collaborate and network with fellow students from other regions at the Milner Hotel, York.

The conference was hosted in collaboration with the High Performance Foundation, an independent charity working with young people and schools to build mental strength, develop employability skills and increase social mobility.

Chloe Dannatt, CEO and Co-Founder at High Performance Foundation, said:

“At the High Performance Foundation, we’re proud and excited to collaborate with app to help young people build confidence, resilience, and the skills they need to thrive beyond the classroom. It’s been incredibly inspiring to see the students from across the Outwood Family of Schools come together to focus on their mental strength.”

Guest speakers on the day included Callum Hall, a Paralympian and Jamie Carter, a content creator, who spoke to the students about mental health, resilience and overcoming challenges.

Callum Hall said:

“I was excited to speak to the students about my life with a spinal cord injury. Hopefully, they were able to identify with challenges that I’ve faced in my life and can take away the message that overcoming failure and challenges leads to growth and positive change!”

Jamie Carter added:

“Giving the next generation the best starting point possible is really important to me, so hopefully sharing the skills and ideas that I’ve learnt across my 15-year career will help at least one person to achieve their full potential.”

The conference celebrated 15 years since the Trust was founded and was an opportunity to mark the Trust's journey, and look at how students will help shape the next 15 years. To end the day, students built a time capsule to be opened in 15 years, giving an insight into what being an Outwood student in 2025 is like. Every academy placed something special that represents their school community inside, alongside a personalised card to be opened in 2039.

Carolyn Blundell, community executive principal at OGAT, said:

“It has been an incredibly special day sharing the Trust's celebrations with some insightful, innovative and creative young people. All secondary academies in the Trust were represented by students who had travelled from across the north of England, and being able to host the event at The Milner Hotel in York was entirely fitting.

“I have no doubt that the young people who joined us will take the learning from the day to impact positively on all students in their schools and enrich their own lives further. It was a privilege to be part of it.”

A multi-academy trust made up of more than 40 schools across the north of England has signed UNISON’s learning agreement.

app (OGAT) has its headquarters in Wakefield and 27 schools across Yorkshire and Humberside, as well as institutions in the East Midlands, the North West and the North East.

The learning agreement is a commitment from OGAT to help ensure staff who are UNISON members can engage with training and education opportunities provided by the union wherever possible.

UNISON has already provided an online training course for staff working at OGAT, with two more scheduled in the coming weeks. The union also intends to provide further training courses for staff once the new school year begins in September.

UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside OGAT lead Jamie Thompson said:

“I’m delighted that OGAT has agreed to sign this learning agreement.

“It’s an investment in their staff, and an acknowledgement of how important they are.

“Hopefully this is just the start of a productive arrangement between OGAT and UNISON which will see many staff members benefit.

“We are incredibly proud and pleased to join with UNISON in signing this learning agreement. It represents a fundamental recognition and commitment to our invaluable support staff, both in schools and within our trust’s central teams.

“This agreement is a key milestone in strengthening our commitment to their continuous professional development. It ensures our support staff have access to the professional learning that empowers them to be confident experts in their roles, making the difference our children need. By investing in this workforce, we are, in turn, investing in the potential of future generations.

Hub House is designed to be a beacon of support, providing a comprehensive range of services, including a much-needed uniform shop, youth activities, essential adult education programmes, and mental health support. This initiative stemmed from a deep understanding of local needs, evolving into a vibrant centre aimed at addressing the significant challenges the Eastmoor community faces in accessing vital services. The hub will work closely with existing partner services already active within the community, supporting St. Swithun's Community Centre in its vital work with the food pantry and providing additional, complementary support for families and individuals.

Claire Jackson, Trust Strategic Lead for Family & Community Programmes and Partnerships at app (OGAT), said:

“The opening of this Community Hub is a momentous occasion for the community and as a Trust in the development of our Family and Community work.

“We are thrilled to see our vision - a future where our schools are firmly at the heart of our communities, taking shape. Hub House will undoubtedly help break cycles of disadvantage for generations to come.”

The grand opening event, attended by local dignitaries and community leaders, featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tours of the new facility. Visitors were able to learn more about the hub's services while enjoying refreshments, including sweet treats baked by the pupils at Outwood Primary Academy Park Hill. Hub House is a true testament to community collaboration. The project was supported by a significant community grant from Wakefield City Council, which helped fund many essential items from furniture to supplies needed for the renovation.

Crucially, Amco Giffen, led by Dave Timlin, provided invaluable assistance through its company's community pledge. Numerous volunteers dedicated many days to painting, repairing the roof, building new steps, installing blinds and thoroughly cleaning the premises. The support from Amco Giffen, including the donation of furniture for both the Hub House and the school, was instrumental in bringing the project to completion, and it continues to be a vital partner.

Claire Jackson added:

“We also extend our sincere gratitude to the parent volunteers and children from Outwood Primary Academy Park Hill and app City Fields who generously gave their time and effort to help prepare the hub for its opening.”

Looking ahead, the Community Hub has ambitious plans to further expand its reach, develop even more targeted programmes, and foster an even stronger, more resilient community. The goal remains clear: to create a lasting positive impact on the lives of Eastmoor residents and empower every individual to thrive.

Students take action to clear litterSarah RoyalFri, 20 Jun 2025 05:00:00 +0000/ogat-news/2025/6/19/students-take-action-to-clear-litter5b3cc2548f5130df897ee8b8:5ba22a4c70a6adc92989bfef:6854187741659b60c18bd8b1

Students and staff from app City spent a morning with local residents, carrying out a litter pick in the Richmond area.

The group, which included 15 staff and students from the academy, collected 17 bags of litter from around the Stradbroke Road area. Students and staff worked alongside residents, Andy Cook, Andrea Cook and David Morton.

The students, led by student leaders, are all passionate about supporting their local community and protecting the environment. The school is currently working towards becoming a Plastic Free School.

The event was organised by app City and Andy Cook of the local litter picking group S13 Keep It Clean.

Emily Rosaman, Principal at app City, said:

“It is vital for our students to support improving our local community. Our students are keen to take responsibility for looking after the environment around them, so this was a great opportunity for them to help lead the way and learn how small actions can make a big difference.

“We hope to have many more community events throughout the year to ensure we have lots of opportunities to develop their skills and get involved in activities to improve our local area.”

Andy Cook, of S13 Keep It Clean, added:

“It was an absolute pleasure to have worked with app City. The pupils were all super enthusiastic, and it was a pleasure to collaborate with young people who are so dedicated and eco-conscious; this is our future right here!

“The school strives to be plastic-free on its site and is dedicated to the fight against litter, so much so that our joint litter pickings will become a regular thing, not just for this week.”

The most senior judge in England and Wales has visited app Riverside in Middlesbrough to talk to pupils about the work of judges, the justice system, and the rule of law.

Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, visited the secondary school last week (12 June) as part of the Schools Engagement Programme, which aims to provide students with a greater understanding of the judiciary’s work. She was accompanied by Mr Justice Poole, the Family Presiding Judge of the North Eastern circuit, HHJ Mark Thomas, and HHJ Joanne Kidd.

Speaking at the school, the Lady Chief Justice said:

“The rule of law is one of the constitutional pillars that upholds an open and fair society. Our Schools Engagement Programme aims to make it easier for young people to learn about our justice system, which is respected globally, and the fundamental importance of the rule of law to our way of life.

“There are judges from all walks of life serving at every level of our courts and tribunals. For many of them, their path to a career in the law started at school. I want to send a message to all students, from whatever background, that they too could be the lawyers and judges of the future.”

School Principal, Melissa Brant-Smith, said:

“I am both delighted and honoured to welcome the Lady Chief Justice to our school. It is a privilege to host such a distinguished guest, and a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet Baroness Carr in person and engage with her directly. We are truly grateful for her visit and the invaluable insight it offers into the rule of law. I hope this experience will inspire our students and encourage more of them to consider a future career in the judiciary.”

The Lady Chief Justice’s visit comes on the back of work that scores of Diversity and Community Relations Judges (DCRJs) and magistrates (DCRMs) already do in the community. The Lady Chief Justice hopes that this work, often unseen and unsung, will encourage students from all backgrounds to think about a career in the justice system.

The Schools Engagement Programme is backed up by online resources that are available to schools and students on the . These include notes for lessons, fact sheets, and other resources to help schools facilitate learning about the justice system and rule of law.

Schools wishing to invite a judge to speak to students can do so  or by emailing schools@judiciary.co.uk

Ofsted praise for school where ‘pupils are well cared for’Sarah RoyalWed, 18 Jun 2025 09:11:01 +0000/ogat-news/2025/6/6/ofsted-praise-for-school-where-pupils-are-well-cared-for5b3cc2548f5130df897ee8b8:5ba22a4c70a6adc92989bfef:6842cfb42fdb8a390ab3255a

Ofsted has praised app Kirkby in its first inspection since joining the Outwood Family of Schools in 2022. Formerly Kirkby College, the school had been rated as ‘Inadequate’ in all areas by Ofsted due to factors including poor behaviour, low expectations, bullying and lack of support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

A two-day inspection took place in May, resulting in outcomes of ‘Good’ for the school’s leadership and management, quality of education and personal development. Inspectors praised the school for the improvement in behaviour and recognised the Trust's support for leaders, which has led to improvements in all areas of provision since becoming part of the family of schools.

The report opens saying, ‘The school is aspirational for pupils to succeed in all areas of their education. It has worked well to strengthen the curriculum considerably. As a result pupils’ achievement is improving significantly.’

Highlights of the report include:

  • Pupils are well cared for at app Kirkby. They are safe and enjoy good relationships with staff.

  • There are very high expectations for pupils’ behaviour and well-established routines that support good behaviour.

  • The curriculum is broad and ambitious. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) follow the same curriculum as their peers.

  • Staff identify the needs of pupils with SEND quickly and accurately. A range of strategies to support these pupils are implemented effectively. Pupils with SEND achieve well.

  • Reading is a priority. Pupils who need extra support with reading are identified swiftly.

  • Pupils benefit from detailed guidance about the range of choices for their next stages in education and training, as well as information about potential future careers.

  • The school monitors attendance carefully. Dedicated staff work closely with pupils and their families to encourage all pupils to attend school frequently.

Andy Scruby, Lead Principal for app Kirkby, said:

“The outcome of the Ofsted inspection is testament to the collective hard work of our staff and students and is a fantastic reflection of the transformational journey the school has been on since becoming a part of the Outwood family.

“With this external validation from Ofsted recognising our dedication and vision for achieving fantastic outcomes and experiences for our students, we look forward - without complacency - to continuing our work with families and the local community, ensuring app Kirkby is a very special place where students can achieve their full potential.”

Unitemps Teesside partners with Outwood Family of Schools to transform lives and student prospectsSarah RoyalTue, 17 Jun 2025 12:53:45 +0000/ogat-news/2025/6/17/unitemps-teesside-partners-with-outwood-family-of-schools-to-transform-lives-and-student-prospects5b3cc2548f5130df897ee8b8:5ba22a4c70a6adc92989bfef:685160b7dc6f2a779ac9e373

Teesside University’s student recruitment agency Unitemps has formed a partnership with app (OGAT) schools in the region to work with students as an innovative approach to address staffing challenges in local schools across the Tees Valley.

This significant collaboration comes at a time when there are increasing nationwide challenges of education staffing shortages. Unitemps Teesside is paving the way by using a structured and ethical approach to recruitment to provide a long-term solution for the education sector.

The support being delivered by Unitemps is alleviating school staffing pressures by allowing local OGAT to recruit student workers on an as-needed basis, to reduce the reliance on costly external solutions while ensuring learning environments remain supported.

Unitemps are offering a unique opportunity for students to secure roles such as classroom support assistants, exam invigilators and administrative positions to kickstart their careers and enhance their employability.

Launched in September 2024, Unitemps Teesside is a student recruitment agency based in the Student Life Building. Unitemps aims to provide students with flexible paid work to build professional skills and offer high-quality staffing solutions for organisations without the high costs typically associated with recruitment agencies.

The Outwood Family of Schools, known for their educational excellence, welcome this initiative as an impactful and transformative solution to address ongoing staffing challenges by using Unitemps as a vehicle for talented students to act as a sustainable workforce model within local schools to positively impact pupils’ lives.

Katie Kendall, Unitemps Teesside Branch Manager, said:

“Unitemps is delighted to be working with Outwood Academies in the region. This partnership is transforming lives on both sides, as schools are gaining reliable and cost-effective staffing solutions to fill skills gaps and our students are obtaining invaluable hands-on experience to strengthen their employability, which will help them to build their desired career paths into education.

“This initiative is supporting the local education sector while offering a pathway for the next generation of teaching staff and education professionals.”

Julie Slater, Chief Executive Principal at Outwood Institute of Education, said:

“We're excited to be in partnership with Unitemps Teesside University to enhance educational outcomes and aspirations for students in the Tees Valley. This collaboration encompasses several key initiatives including our ‘Be Inspired' Research Programme, in-class support from Teesside students and building on existing trainee teacher placements aimed at addressing regional recruitment challenges and promoting careers in education.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to developing a robust pipeline of future educators and empowering students in the Tees Valley.”

George Edwards, Talent and Recruitment Coordinator at app, said:

“The partnership we are building with Teesside University is an excellent example of how educational institutions can work together to benefit young people in local communities, as well as promote Teesside-based employment within the education sector as a career pathway for graduates following the completion of their studies.

“Unitemps is allowing us to integrate undergraduate students into our classrooms, allowing them to support our pupils both academically and aspirationally, alongside helping us to promote career pathways within education.”

Stephen Wells, Assistant Principal at app Riverside, said:

“Having only opened our doors five years ago, our school is new to GCSE examinations and we have found the support provided by Unitemps invaluable to help boost our staff availability. Being able to secure staff that are external to our own has allowed us to free up people to support other students' development, whilst at the same time helping reduce workload. The fact we can utilise Unitemps as a provider helps alleviate some of the issues that occur.”

Postgraduate Taught Masters in Physiotherapy Student Serge Saba said:

“My time so far with Unitemps and my work with the Outwood has been a great experience. I am a second year master’s degree student and I have been able to work alongside my studies as well as broaden my experiences and skillsets. I’ve really been able to expand my knowledge in this field through work, as well as specific training from Outwood. As a full-time student, I would highly recommend this position to anyone looking to take a step into the world of teaching and to see what it’s all about.”

Professor Steve Cummings, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Exchange) said:

“I am delighted to share that the University’s in-house recruitment service, Unitemps, has partnered with app to provide support to school pupils across Teesside. This collaboration helps our students gain valuable classroom experience whilst in paid employment helping pupils across the region. The University and OGAT are committed to raising student aspirations and supporting local schools.”

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced the appointment of Bowmer + Kirkland to deliver the permanent building in Middlesbrough, set to open its doors in Spring 2027. This initiative is part of the government's ongoing commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in areas with the greatest need.

The school will be constructed in Middlehaven, south of the Transporter Bridge, between Middlesbrough College and the Old Town Hall. Work will begin on the site in mid-June 2025.

Trust personnel from Outwood Grange Family of Schools will continue to work hard with all partners to ensure this momentum is maintained.

Staff, students, and families have long awaited this development. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm, as the community anticipates the positive impact the school will have on the educational experience of the young people.

Melissa Brant-Smith, Principal at app Riverside, commented:

“The school community has waited a long time for this project to begin. Our young people have continued to be positive and committed in their ‘temporary’ school on Russell Street and at Eston, however, it will be amazing to eventually be in a first-class facility, which they fully deserve.”

The project reflects the government's dedication to investing in the future of young people across the country. The new school will offer outstanding facilities and an ambitious curriculum designed to meet the needs of its students, preparing them for success in further education and beyond.

Stakeholders will be informed of the progress of the project through app Riverside’s social media channels and regular newsletters issued by Bowmer + Kirkland to residents and businesses neighbouring the site.
